VISITOR'S GUIDE

How much does golf cost in Japan?
― a visitor's price guide

Golf in Japan is more affordable than most visitors expect — especially on weekdays, where a full round with lunch can cost less than a nice dinner out. Weekends and famous clubs run higher. Here's a realistic breakdown of what you'll pay, line by line, plus one small tax that surprises people. Figures are typical ranges; always confirm on the booking page.

1. Green fees

The green fee is the main cost and swings a lot with the day of the week, season, and prestige of the club.

When / whereTypical green fee (incl. lunch)
Weekday, standard course near a city¥6,000 – ¥12,000
Weekend / holiday, standard course¥12,000 – ¥22,000
Early-morning or twilight plan¥4,000 – ¥8,000
Prestige / championship club¥20,000 – ¥40,000+

※Many plans bundle lunch. Prices rise in spring and autumn peak season and dip in mid-summer and winter.

2. Cart, caddie & rentals

  • Cart: often included in "self-play" plans; occasionally a small add-on (¥0–1,000/person).
  • Caddie: optional at most courses. Where offered, roughly ¥3,000–5,000 per group to add. Self-play is the common, cheaper default.
  • Rental clubs: ¥3,000–5,000 for a full set. Reserve when you book.
  • Rental shoes: around ¥500–1,000.
  • Club shipping (takkyubin): ¥1,500–2,500 each way if you courier your own bag to the course.

3. The golf-course tax

Japan has a small golf-course utilization tax (about ¥400–1,200 depending on the course), added at checkout. It's not always shown in the headline plan price, so factor a few hundred yen extra per person. Players under 18 or over 70, and some others, may be exempt.

4. A realistic all-in budget

For a typical visitor playing a standard course as self-play with lunch:

  • Weekday, own clubs: roughly ¥8,000–13,000 all-in (green fee + tax + lunch).
  • Weekday, rental clubs & shoes: add ~¥4,000–6,000 → about ¥12,000–19,000.
  • Weekend, own clubs: roughly ¥14,000–24,000 all-in.

Add transport (rental car + tolls + fuel, or train + club bus) on top. Split across a group, a car often works out cheaper and more flexible.

5. How to pay less

  • Play Monday–Friday. The single biggest saving — often roughly half the weekend rate.
  • Book early-morning or twilight plans for a shorter, cheaper round.
  • Go self-play rather than adding a caddie.
  • Avoid peak weeks (Golden Week in early May, peak autumn weekends).
  • Compare plans on the booking sites — the same course lists several prices for different times.
